Traditional vs simplified characters
Hello,
If I well understand, the characters set to use on this wiki is simplified characters. If I also well understand, traditional characters and simplified characters are always differents, and can be substituted easyly.
Monsieur,
you quite well understood our situations here.
we must use the simplified char.s "东京" and reject the traditional counterpart: "東京" <== one character difference, not two :)))
To make good use of Wikipedia:机器人/TraditionalToSimplifiedParameters, make different sections according to the number of characters in the combinaison (1 character, 2 characters, ...), beginning by the higher number at the top of the page (for technical reasons). --Hercule 2008年9月10日 (礼拜三) 13:08 (UTC)
I do propose to run my bot regulary to replace automaticly traditional characters by simplified characters.
gonna to be great if that works, I do not know about easy or not though。 。 。 but I know there are at least 4000 pairs to start with, I have done about 500 —— some simplified have 3 or 4 mapping trad. char.s, so the mapping is "many to one" some-times ╱ but most of times it is "one to one".
initially there can be confusion, so some human proof reading is needed for the results but in my opinion that's minor issue 。 。 。
For substitution that should be verified by a human, we can use a parameter in the template. In this case my bot would list the diff on a special page in order a wu speaker can verify it and correct it if needed.
I have a lot of technical possibilities in mind. The thing is that I must clearly understand the possible issues ;). --Hercule 2008年9月10日 (礼拜三) 13:08 (UTC)
As I don't know wu, I need the help of the communauty to determine substitutions to do. The parameters pages is Wikipedia:机器人/TraditionalToSimplifiedParameters. Edit this page to indicate the substitution to do with {{TraditionalToSimplifiedParameters|Traditional character|Simplified character}} If will be displayed as
Good idea but one problem. Sometimes we still need traditional Chinese in the article and we don't want it to be automatically converted to simplified Chinese since one simplified Chinese character can map two or more traditional character(s) and sometimes we need the difference especially in Wu.
If one traditionnal character can be translated by more than one simplified character, we can create another template (like Template:TraditionalToSimplifiedParametersAmbiguity for exemple). The bot could make the more usual substitution, and list the change in a special page, to be reviewed by wu speaker. Or could not substitute and list page on a special page for translation is done by a human. The first solution is easier for maintainers but the article can be wrong during time of verification.
If a traditional character has to be always replaced by a combinaison of simplified, it's not a problem, indicate the combinaison in the template and the program will make substitution.
If an expression has stay in traditional characters as a quote for exemple, we can use a special template that will be reconized by the bot (Template:Trad for exemple. The advantage of a template is that we can also make special formating for this text.
If you're interrested we can make tests on a reduced set of characters --Hercule 2008年9月10日 (礼拜三) 15:50 (UTC)
On eo wiki they have a special module installed (LanguageEo.php) that automaticly convert u+x to ŭ, and display u+x+x as eu. but they have only 6 caracters that need this translation. I don't know if it's realistic to want to use this system here.
If you decide to use a bot system on this wiki I can help you, but I wouldn't like to work for nothing ;).
For unique conversion the system is clear. I just have to add a system to ignore templates and I would be able to just change displayed characters. Case more complexe we can decide of a add of {{traditional characters to clean-up}} template by the bot. But only if a human is ready to make the corrections.
If correcting some characters and not the others is stupid my bot can add the template to all page using a traditional character, without making any replacement.
The decision of the best solution has to be done by the wu speaker ;)
Because it's still in test I think we can wait. When all will be OK the bot will be launch regulary on all pages. --Hercule 2008年9月15日 (礼拜一) 09:00 (UTC)
